An Introduction to Nilos Rings
Of the four factors that combine to determine maximum bearing life, environment is probably one of the most difficult to control—especially when bearings do not contain integral seals or shields. While external rubber seals may be used to keep water and dirt out of the bearing's operating environment, in extreme conditions, metal seals—called Nilos rings, are a good long term solution. They can be used as primary seals (i.e. the only seal) or secondary (additional) seals.

A Nilos ring is an external metal bearing seal that produces a small labyrinth like sealing surface on the inner or outer ring of a bearing. When mounted in pairs, the bearing is sealed for life.

Nilos rings, which can be used with or without integral bearing seals, are available in galvanized steel, stainless steel and brass. The material that you choose depends on the application and the operating environment. Galvanized steel is especially good in environments where there are tough abrasive particles. Stainless steel is usually used in food processing environments, and other applications where water or other corrosive materials are present. Brass is used in applications where there are high concentrations of salt or other corrosive solutions.

How they work

The seal for a Nilos Ring is obtained when the leading edge of the seal, rotating under slight pressure, laps the surface of the inner or outer bearing ring. This lapping process creates the sealing surface which keeps grease in and contaminants out of the bearing.

During the run-in process, microscopic metal particles are formed and deposited on the outside of the sealing lip. Those particles that do migrate into the sealing area are trapped in the grease within the recessed area of the Nilos Ring so as not to affect the bearing's performance.

Nilos rings come in 10 styles depending on whether the ring will be used to seal against the outer ring of an open, sealed or shielded bearing or the inner ring of an open, sealed or shielded bearing. There are also Nilos rings for applications in which taper roller bearings are used.

Benefits of the LSTO Design

The LSTO Nilos ring, a unique configuration, is a grease filled labyrinth seal that was developed for bearings used in extreme applications. This seal is extremely effective against even the smallest particles of dirt and moisture and can be used in applications where temperatures reach 250 degrees F.

The ultra thin LSTO takes up less space than a conventional rubber seal. Another advantage of the LSTO is that these all-metal seals do not have rubber components to wear out, harden and leak.

Low friction

The coefficient of friction of the LSTO Nilos Ring is almost zero, making it ideal for use in high speed applications and in applications where additional heat from friction may be undesirable. The LSTO can be used with any bearing—whether open, shielded or sealed. These seals, are the ultimate in bearing protection.

What sort of bearing can you use it with?
Almost any ball, cylindrical roller, taper roller or spherical roller bearing having standard ISO dimensions.

How do I find the correct ring?
Specify the bearing reference and the type of ring required For example Bearing 6205 with AV rings becomes 6205AV - simple as that!

Summary

Nilos rings are available in a wide assortment of styles, materials and sealing configurations. In addition, there's a Nilos ring available to fit almost any standard bearing size. The Nilos ring is a proven means to protect the bearing from contaminants that could reduce the life of the bearing.
